I remember where I was and what I was wearing the moment I received that phone call. It was like angels were singing in my ears. Even though it wasn't the grade I'd pictured myself in, I knew that I was following His plan. I was a senior at The University of Texas, and after a pretty traumatizing breakup and tough semester, hearing my (now) boss say how excited she was to have me on her staff and how much she knew I would love it just filled me with so much joy for the first time in awhile. Things were looking up. I was unstoppable. I was also nervous, afraid, weary, and already thinking about the tough work that lay ahead. I remember calling my mom and saying, "I think I have a job!" I will never forget that moment.
I'm starting with this post because I know so many college seniors, new certification recipients, and student teachers are in this grueling job fair/interview limbo right now. I'm here to tell you to keep going. Keep your expectations high; not unrealistic, but don't sell yourself short. Also, keep your options open. Believe in yourself and know how worth it all of your hard work will be.
In Mark chapter 9, a man brings his son, who has been possessed by a controlling spirit, to see Jesus after his disciples failed to help the boy. Jesus says the man is part of an unbelieving generation with little faith. Sometimes, when staying up late making those lessons extra special, bringing treats to your class or cohort, and going to the 3rd interview in a week, you can get bogged down and become part of that unbelieving generation. That is terrifying to me. We have to believe not only in ourselves, but in His plan. He surrounds us with love and if we let Him, He will guide us through life in the most excellent way.
In Mark 9:22, the man seems to doubt Jesus and question his abilities saying, "But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." Jesus is blown away at the man's words and says in Mark 9:23, "Everything is possible for one who believes." I imagine Jesus looking at this man like "ARE YOU CRAZY? You better believe it, dude!" Similarly, sometimes we lose faith and seem to doubt ourselves and our abilities. When this starts to happen, don't forget that "Everything is possible for one who believes." Now, this doesn't mean that you're going to become a rockstar or win the lottery if you believe in that, but believing in God can help you accomplish great things.
When you hear those soothing, rewarding words ("You're hired!"), don't forget to thank the One who provides you with everything because you believe in Him and trust His will.
Through Faith in Him and the Fifth,
Meg
